The Nuclear Security Project is making significant progress, increasing the political space for addressing global nuclear dangers and advancing understanding of the steps needed to reduce nuclear dangers.

The Project builds on the January 4, 2007 Wall Street Journal op-ed by former Secretary of State George Shultz former Secretary of Defense Bill Perry, former Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger and former Senator Sam Nunn. NTI serves as the Secretariat for the Project.

More than two-thirds of the living former U.S. secretaries of state, secretaries of defense and national security advisors — spanning the Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton and Bush Administrations — support the project.

A May 2008 meeting of more than 150 ambassadors and representatives to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) Preparatory Conference in Geneva resulted in a productive discussion about how the Nuclear Security Project can help spur a revival of the nonproliferation consensus in 2010.
